The excrement of carrion-eating birds like eagles, osprey, and
buzzards is very acidic. These large birds find transmission and
distribution structures in electric utility systems a fine place
to perch and rest. Corrosion begins on the rods used to protect
cables at points of contact, such as dead end assembles, and
single or double suspension clamps. Corrosion erodes the rods,
moves into the clamp areas, expands down into the cable, turning
the fibers dark and resulting in downtime and expensive replacement
costs. Fiber Optic Products can be installed when new cables go
up or as a retrofit to keep fibers safe and impervious to buzzard
damage.
