MOTOR PROTECTION

The art of motor protection has changed drastically with the introduction of the microprocessor motor protection relay. Programming the new relay requires a thorough knowledge of stator and rotor operating characteristics, both under normal and abnormal conditions. The algorithms used allow the end user to run motors at upper limits and still provide adequate protection.
This seminar is somewhat generic in scope but specific motor protection and setpoints are directly related to the Multilin 269+ Motor Protection Relay.

Specific Topics:

  • Equivalent circuit, loading
  • Abnormal voltage - low, high, phasors and motor losses unbalanced, residual and
  • Insulation, temperature rise and starting relative life
  • Single phasing - causes,
  • Thermal limit curves, hot & cold, sequence currents, motor locked rotor, failure to heating and the "K" factor accelerate and running overload
  • Negative sequence current -
  • Thermal capacity
  • 12T algorithm temperature rise, relative
  • RTD bias setpoints life and derating
  • Full load thermal capacity
  • Unbalance protection algorithm
  • reduction setpoints
  • Instantaneous overcurrent
  • Grounding - systems, connections protection and setpoints
  • Differential protection
  • Synchronous motors
  • Loss-of- field/out-of-step
